How many times have you noticed that the same idea seems to show up over and over again in your life. Every blog you seem to read is about personal development or dreams or spirit guides or abundance or something else that different writers seem to pick up to write about unknown to each other at the same time?
Earlier in the week I read an archived article written by someone, sorry but I have read so many new blogs this week that I don't remember who you were, that was afraid someone else might assume that she had taken his idea and written about it on her blog and then didn't give him credit for having the idea first.
I think the Universe cycles and recycles ideas and those of us in tune with those ideas pick it up and write about it. Is it synchronicity or just luck that everyone picks up on the same idea at the same time?

Independence, Not Just For A Day
On July 4, in the United States, we celebrated our Independence Day from England way back in 1776. To Americans that seems like a long time---232 years of freedom. Out in the rest of the nations of the world, we are still babies. You go to other parts of the world and see buildings, monuments and temples older than our country is.
I consider myself to be a patriotic American. I love my country and I cherish my freedoms as an American. Still, I am beginning to question some of the decisions that are being made by the leaders of my country. After traveling to other parts of the world, I can understand how some countries think we are arrogant Americans. We tend to take our freedoms for granted. Not everyone in the world has those freedoms that we do. Not every country in the world grants those freedoms to their people.
This isn't meant to be a political statement and I am not asking for support or criticisms for my thoughts about July 4. For that is all they are---some thoughts that went through my head as I sat down to write this article. This isn't even what I planned to write about. All I really want to make you aware of, as Americans, is that we truly are blessed to be Americans and to have the freedom to disagree or agree with our leaders. Not all people have that right as we do. I feel that we truly are blessed to be born American at this time in the history of the world. Don't take your freedoms for granted. Not everyone has them.
Freedom does come with responsibilities. One of the freedoms that I have and take advantage of with my blog is the Freedom of Speech. That Freedom of Speech gives me the right to speak and write about any topic that I choose on my blog. I didn't always feel that I had this right.
In my family, freedom of speech was only granted to one person---my dad. From now on, or at least when I remember to, I am going to call him by his name, Raymond. Paula Kawal says that lessens the power that he has over my ability to recover from the abuse of my childhood. ( http://patriciasingleton.blogspot.com/2008/06/shame-abusers-friend.html ). So you see even some people in the United States don't always have the power of speech, or they don't know that they do. It is not a freedom to be taken for granted. I didn't know until I was 19 and left home that I could speak my mind and that it was ok to have an opinion different than Raymond's. It was many years later at the age of 38 before I really found the Freedom of Speech to take about the incest. When I started to talk about it, then is when I experienced real freedom for the first time. Even then, I was afraid that God or Raymond or someone was going to come and strike me down dead or call me a whore or something just as bad that my mind would conjure up. None of those things happened. I felt my first taste of freedom and it grew from that moment.
With my blog, I have taken it a step further in writing about the incest. As a lady from another country made me aware of recently, I now have a voice that the whole world can hear when I speak about incest. Notice that I am not calling it "my incest." (I may forget and slip there occasionally. This particular awareness is new to me.) It is no longer "my incest." I am in the process of stepping away from the "my" part. I am not in denial. I am not suppressing anything. I am giving myself the freedom to be me without the pain and struggle of my story. My story is not who I am. ( http://patriciasingleton.blogspot.com/2008/01/my-stories-are-point-of-reference.html )
I just finished reading the Debbie Ford book "The Secret of the Shadow, The Power of Owning Your Whole Story". It is a powerful book that has given me many new awarenesses to work with. You will continue to hear me mention this book in more articles to come as I share the wisdom of Debbie's words and the differences it is making in my thinking.
Can you see that this 4th of July Independence Day has a special significance for me? Personal freedom is a new idea for me because I am connecting with it on new, deeper levels as I work on releasing the past. Living in the past, you don't have freedom. Freedom comes from living in the moment. You aren't there when you are feeling the pain of the past. Having the ability to reach out to others around the world through the internet expands the Freedom of Speech for me. I can use my words to reach out and help others heal from the pain of their stories of incest or other forms of abuse. We all have the freedom to not stay stuck in that pain. Reaching out to others gives us the beginnings of that freedom.
Another freedom that I decided to use the past two weeks was the freedom to say no. I said no to two job opportunities because neither was right for me. One I would have been bored silly within a month of accepting the job and would have come to resent my boss and myself for putting me into that situation. Instead I said, "No thank you. This job isn't for me." The second was much more than a job opportunity, it was a position of leadership as a healer in the healing community. I turned it down because the timing is not right and because I don't want to feel pressured to be something that I am not. I may pursue this avenue in the future but not until I have explored all of my healing abilities, my talents and spiritual gifts to know which direction is the right one for me. I am just beginning to ask my spiritual guides to show me the direction that my healing abilities need to go. I want to learn those healing abilities before I can possibly teach them to others. I know that I could be a leader. I know that through my blog my voice is just beginning to be heard. For now, that is the avenue that I will follow as I continue to explore new avenues to express my Divine nature.
I did not make either of those job decisions from a place of fear. This week, I stepped into my full personal power in being in charge of my life instead of letting others direct my life. That is a glorious feeling. It is also a freedom that I have not always felt that I had. Today I know that I do have that freedom of personal power.
Now to what I intended this article to be about. On Friday, July 4, 2008, just one year one month and three days after writing my first blog article (June 1 was my blog's one year birthday.), the number of views of my blog went over 10,000. On July 4, the total views of my blog was 10,022 of the 117 articles that I have posted on Spiritual Journey Of A Lightworker. On June 1, 2007, my first article was "Three Of My Past Life Experiences" found at http://patriciasingleton.blogspot.com/2007/06/three-of-my-past-life-experiences.html . Take the time now to click on the link and go read that article if you haven't already. Most of you haven't. Leave a comment and let me know what you think of that first article. I know it may be a stretch for some of you who may not believe in reencarnation. That is ok. All I ask is that you be open to the possibility. I wasn't always open either. Now I am since I have knowledge of some of mine.
I have between 130-157 subscribers daily now. Thank you to all of my subscribers and to those of you who have taken the time to view my blog over the past year. The average is 138 subscribers daily now. My growth has been a steady upward journey in my personal life as well as my blog. People from the following countries have looked at my blog: the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, India, Israel, France, Germany, Indonesia, Australia, Chile, China, and Sweden. I hope I haven't forgotten anybody. China and Sweden have been the most resent countries to view my blog. I thank you all for honoring me with your continued presence on my blog. I thank you for becoming part of my journey and for allowing me to become a part of your journey toward Oneness and Freedom for all.

Blame And Resentment Are Toxic Emotions
Right now I am reading the book "The Secret of the Shadow, The Power of Owning Your Whole Story" written by Debbie Ford. This is the second of Debbie's books that I have read. The first was a few years ago and called "The Dark Side of the Light Chasers."
On page 88 Debbie says,
"Blame and resentment are the toxic emotions that keep us stuck inside the smallness of our stories. Woven throughout our personal dramas is an underlying conversation that might sound like this: 'Look what you did to me. You screwed up my life. I'm a nothing just like you'; or 'I'm never going to amount to anything---just like you told me.' We hold others responsible for our deficiencies and then set out to prove that we have in fact been ill treated and wronged. Our 'poor me' story becomes our evidence, proving that we've been mistreated, neglected, or abused. And every time we fall short of doing our best, we have the perfect alibi. We get to say, 'If I hadn't had that angry father, lousy girlfriend, alcoholic mother, or been raped, molested, beaten, ignored, abandoned, called names, I wouldn't be like this!' Then we use every failure, every disappointment, every broken relationship or botched business deal to support our conviction that we have been victimized. We continually sabotage our efforts toward success and happiness in order to hold on to our resentment and keep our stories intact. Our continued failures and misery prove to us that we are right and those we blame are wrong."
On page 89 Debbie goes on to say, "The people we blame offer a perfect excuse for our self-sabotage. We are unconsciously punishing them by not being as successful or as happy as we could be. We say, either verbally or nonverbally, 'Look, I really am a failure. You really did hurt me.' "
Are any of you doing this with your story of abuse and pain? Are you allowing your story to keep you from living your dreams, from fulfilling your purpose in life, from being who you were really meant to be?
I am less than half-way through the book and Debbie Ford has given me a lot to think about. What I have learned so far also adds to one of my recent articles "Quit Playing Small And Insignificant" ( http://patriciasingleton.blogspot.com/2008/06/quit-playing-small-and-insignificant.html ) in that our stories can keep us living a very limited life where we don't use all of our abilities and talents because we feel inferior, wounded, damaged, victimized.
In staying stuck in our stories of victimization, we refuse to live a full life. We believe we are victims and we resent those who abused, ignored or abandoned us. We don't feel confident in ourselves. We see ourselves as failing because we hold on to our fears of inadequacy and unworthiness.
What have I learned from this book so far? Quit playing out the victim role of my story. Accept full responsibility for who I am, for where I am going. See and accept the blessings that have come out of my story of abuse and pain. We all have blessings that can come out of our past.
I know that I would not be as strong-willed, as compassionate, as vocal about child abuse without my story. With all of that, my story is not who I am.

Surrender---Using A God Box
I recently read an article called How To Eliminate Worry written by Andrea Hess and found at http://www.empoweredsoul.com/blog/?p=169 .
I left a comment:
"Many years ago, a friend told me about her God Box. You make or use any box of your choice. You can decorate it all pretty or leave it plain. Mine was actually a metal can that I had and liked. What do you do with the box? When you have something that worries you, write it on a piece of paper. Fold the paper and put it in your God Box. Then you let go and ask God to handle it. At the end of the year, you get your God Box and read all of the pieces of paper that are in the Box. You will be surprised at how many are no longer problems simply because you let go of them and let God handle the problem."
Andrea's comment back to me:
"Patricia - I love that image of a 'God Box.' What I always am concerned about, though, is that fine line between appropriate surrender, and abdicating our responsibility as Creator of our experience. Any thoughts?"
My comment, in answer to Andrea's question:
"Andrea, I do believe in taking the appropriate action on my part before putting my problem in the God Box. I believe in taking responsibility for being a Co-Creator (with God) of my reality. Putting something in my God Box is so that I give God the space to do his part rather than worrying it to death and creating the opposite of what I want. The God Box gets ego out of the way. It stops any obessive behaviors from getting out of hand. Worry just makes the situation worse. Once it goes in the God Box, I am able to stop the worry. First, I do my part, then I turn it over to God for the results."
That is the end of my comments with Andrea. I did tell her that I would be doing this article. I have intended to do it for some time. This is one gift that I would like to share with my readers that was given to me by my friend Kathy White. Some of you have read about Kathy and may remember her name from one of my early articles called The Most Influencial Person---#3---Recovery. To read more about Kathy go to http://patriciasingleton.blogspot.com/2007/07/most-influencial-person-3-recovery.html
This article is dedicated to her memory. The idea of doing a God Box is probably the best gift that Kathy ever gave me. It helped teach me the idea of surrender.
For an incest survivor, the idea of surrender is a difficult one to even think about, much less do. Surrender takes a lot of trust which incest survivors are usually short on. Surrender doesn't mean playing victim and doing nothing. It means doing whatever you can, in your power, to solve a problem and then surrendering or turning over the results to God. That is where the God Box comes in.
The process that I take in using my God Box is to do the necessary action to solve whatever my problem is, then write it down on a small piece of paper. Fold the paper and put it in my God Box. Say a prayer asking God to handle the results. Put the God Box away and forget about it until the next problem comes up. Then the process starts all over again. At the end of the year, you take out your God Box, open it and read all of the small pieces of paper that you put into it during the year. You will have forgotten some of the problems totally. Others you will remember, how once you got ego out of the way, the problems seem to just disappear. Others may still be something that is a problem. Put it back into the Box. Don't take it out of God's hands.
I haven't actually used my God Box in a long time. I surrender things a lot easier than I used to. Today I simply say a prayer and turn it over to God. The God Box was just a tool that I used to teach me to surrender and to trust God and myself.
My first year of using a God Box, I wasn't very good at surrender. I only put 4 things in it. The second year, I was a little better and had over 40 items in my God Box at the end of the year. The third year, I either did pretty good or had more problems or both. I had over 100 items that I released to God that year.
The God Box is a great tool for learning about surrender. It also taught me that I didn't have to carry everything on my shoulders. I am not in control of the world. I am not even in control of my little bit of the world. Guess what? The world didn't fall apart because I was able to surrender control. Control could be a whole other article. Not today.
Kathy, thanks for teaching me about surrendering and God Boxes.

This Is The Year That My Dreams Come True!
The Daily Word for January 1, 2008 says "This is the year that my dreams come true! This is the year! These words from a beloved poem invite me to eagerly welcome the new year: 'Wonderful, wonderful, fortunate you, This is the year that your dreams come true!'
This is the year that my dreams do come true as I am blessed with life-celebrating opportunities. Some at first may appear to be happenstance. Yet I know that they have come to me by divine appointment.
This is the year that expectations flow from my vision of good. I am an active participant in the joy-filled life of me!
This is the year that I move forward with zeal and enthusiasm, giving and receiving, committing to purposeful, rewarding goals.
This is the year that brings happiness, a year that I will live to bless. Wonderful, wonderful, fortunate me, for this is the year that my dreams come true!"
Today in church was my third time this week to run across this poem. In addition to church and reading the above message on January 1, a friend also emailed me this poem in a New Year's Day card. I decided to write about the significance of this poem to me. It holds a special place in my heart because it was the favorite poem of my dear friend Carol Ann Meadows.
Carol was the person that introduced me to the concept of Master Minding. Four of us got together and formed a Master Mind Group. We would read the poem (I will have to find a copy of the whole poem and share it here later.) to remind us that anything is possible with the help of God and a positive attitude. Before this week, I had not been reminded of this poem since our last Master Mind group met the week before Carol died on December 1, 2005. I can hear Carol's voice as she recited this poem. She believed it with all of her heart. She believed that we create every single part of our world. She is the one who taught me about Unity.
All I can say is, "Ok, Carol, you have my attention." I know that this year will be the one that I create for myself. I know that 2008 is truly going to be the glorious year that I have been wishing for everyone including myself. It is more than a wish. It is a reality that I choose to create. Does that mean there will be no challenges? Not at all. Challenges are how we grow. So have a glorious 2008, I intend to.
The Secret Is Not Just Wishful Thinking
"Change comes naturally.
I do my best and God does the rest.
GRACE Whenever I am trying to improve some aspect of myself or my life, I don't let myself feel pressured to overanalyze details and instigate change. The truth is, as Jesus put it: 'I seek to do not my own will but the will of him who sent me.'
In seeking God's will, my part is to contribute whatever I am able and then allow God to do the rest. I think of the caterpillar that weaves a chrysalis around itself and then allows the grace of God to complete the transformation. The caterpillar cannot force itself to become a butterfly. Instead, it cooperates with the divine process at work and so do I. With the blessing of grace active in my life, I experience change that happens naturally, and I am at peace."
The above affirmation comes from the Sunday, June 10, 2007 page 25 of Daily Word, The Silent Unity Magazine. If you like the affirmation, go to the sidebar and click on the website of Unity Village to find more about the magazine.
This affirmation reminded me of an article that I have been wanting to write for awhile about the use of The Secret and its use of the Law of Attraction, or should I say how some people misuse the Law of Attraction? As my title says, The Secret Is Not Just Wishful Thinking. My husband recently told me that the movie The Secret is said to be responsible for a huge number of people filing for bankruptcy and losing their homes. Supposedly, many of these people went out and bought homes that they could not afford to buy after doing affirmations about buying a home. From what I can see, many of these people did affirmations but didn't take any action to make buying these new, sometimes expensive, homes a real possibility.
Doing affirmations alone is not what the Law of Attraction is about. As the above affirmation says, "I do my best and then God does the rest."
Doing my best means taking whatever actions that are needed on my part and then letting go of the results. Once we let go of the results, then God or the Universe, whatever you choose to call Him/Her/It can take over and change happens naturally without us interfering.
Doing my best is not relying upon wishful thinking. Yes, I believe affirmations work. I have seen them work in my life and in the life of others.
Wishful thinking is just saying, "Golly, God, can you give this to me? I think I am worthy, but I am not sure. I don't want to be responsible, in case I don't succeed. I might fail if I act, so I will just sit back and watch and want and whine. If I don't get what I want, it isn't my fault. This Secret stuff must not work. Yeah, I will blame it on The Secret. These people are just after my money. It doesn't really work."
I have heard supposedly "spiritual" people say some of these exact words. Where is the trust in themselves and in the Universe. Doubt is fear speaking loud and clear. Whining is another way of saying, "Oh, poor me. I am not responsible so I will blame somebody else.
You did not see Jack Canfield of Chicken Soup For The Soul fame tape that check for one million dollars on the ceiling of his bedroom and then just lay there fantacizing about the money coming in. He got busy doing whatever action was necessary on his part to write the books and help sell the books that bought in the check for that million dollars with the smiley face that his publisher wrote to him that year. You have to take whatever action is neccesary on your part to make your dreams come true.
That doesn't mean controlling every step of the way to the end result. When you do that, then the Universe cannot bring you what it wants to bring to you. You do your part and then get out of the way so the Universe can do its part.
1. Find and write affirmations that will help you become aligned with the Universe.
2. Monitor your thoughts and words to be positive.
3. Stay away from negative people that don't want your dreams to come true.
4. Take whatever actions necessary to do your part of what needs to be done.
5. Let the Universe do its part.
The Secret is not just wishful thinking. The Law of Attraction works if you let it.

What Good Will You Allow God To Do Through You?
I am behind on my reading since I started writing this blog. I also have a habit of losing my Daily Word magazines since they come in a month early. Daily Word is "The Silent Unity Magazine". If you are interested in finding out more about Daily Word or Silent Unity go to their website at http://www.unityonline.org/ . I recently found my February copy of Daily Word and started reading it.
On page 14 of the February issue of Daily Word, Rev. Howard Caesar who is the senior minister at Unity Church of Christianity, Houston, Texas, says, "We are co-creators with our Creator, and God will do for us all that we are open to God doing through us. Even now, the good you seek is seeking you!"
I have been a member of a small Unity Church in Hot Springs, Arkansas for most of the past 10 years. This is my only experience of Unity teachings. I like the idea that we are "co-creators with our Creator". The mind blowing thought that hit me when I read this was that "God will do for us all that we are open to God doing through us". Did you hear that, "all that we are open to God doing through us".
Is that saying that we can limit what God does for us? Why would we do something like that? Why would we limit the good that God can give us? Why would we limit the good that God can do through us?
Let me list the ways:
1. By doubting that we are worthy.
2. By being afraid.
3. By saying that we don't deserve anything better than we already have.
4. By not loving others enough.
5. By not being open to change.
6. By being stingy with our time or money.
7. By being ungrateful for what we already have.
8. By not loving ourselves enough.
9. By not being willing to move beyond our comfort zone.
10. By letting our ego believe that "it" is "who" we are.
The limiting beliefs can go on and on. Which ones have you used in the past? My biggest obstacle has been fear of change. Not loving myself was at the top of my list for many years.
What is your favorite limiting belief? Let go of it and let God work His wonders in your Life.
